After two decades as one of the country's most successful trial lawyers, the joys of two children and the anguish of losing one of them when he was still in his teens, John Edwards came out of nowhere to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998, defeating incumbent Republican Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina. It was success for the son of a mill worker, for someone who had majored in textile management as an undergraduate - in case his legal career didn't pan out.
